"Beware the Media Hype on Winter Influenza" or "Why the Grinch Should Take Your T.V." (for health's sake)

Is there a pharmaceutical bias in the media?

Every winter the news media does a sensationalist job of frightening millions into believing that illness is the result of a pharmaceutical drug- or vaccine-deficiency. A recent study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine [Vol 178. pp. 527-533, (2008)] reports that there is actually no statistically significant reduction in mortality between the elderly who get the 25 mcg-mercury-containing flu shot and those who do not. Where is the media's focus on good nutrition and quality supplementation instead? It makes you wonder if mainstream news reporters have ever stepped foot into a health food store before.

In reality, the reason that many people are more susceptible to flu and other respiratory conditions during the winter months is due to dietary insufficiency, not media fear-mongering about shots.

The holiday season brings with it ample opportunity for overindulgence in rich foods and excessive amounts of animal protein. The resulting digestive burden upsets the delicate intestinal balance responsible for much of the body's immune capacities. Undue digestive stress and the inevitable liver congestion that follows precipitates the "outbreaks" blamed on "what's going around." This is where we discover the critical difference in biological maturity evidenced in Antoine Béchamp's Law of the Terrain versus the immature and superficial concepts found in Louis Pasteur's so-called Germ Theory.

Which of the following is correct?

A. "It is the mere presence of, or contact with, a pathogen that results in disease."

B. "It is the terrain, milieu or environment that determines health or disease, NOT the pathogen."

If you chose "B" for Béchamp, go to the head of the class. Antoine is the wise elder who understood nature and Pasteur was the adolescent teenager tilting at microbes (at least until he recanted "germ worship" on his death bed - but that was much later).

Thankfully, there are some simple steps that you can take to keep your family healthy and happy during the coldest months of the year (actually, all year long as well). Reduce the stress on your liver and digestive system by going more natural and organic while simultaneously ingesting smaller portions. In other words, clean up that which goes into your body, so that it is no longer too exhausted to get rid of toxins that have been accumulating for many years.

Then, even if you do enjoy the occasional dessert, it will not be devastating (especially if you take your GTF Chromium). Again, quality is key. Raw Milk Renegade Redux: Letter from a Listener

First there was an American Revolution, then there was the Ron Paul Revolution, now it appears that there is a Raw Milk Revolution. What happens if the whole country re-discovers the nutritional goodness of fresh, organic raw milk? Will there be enough Mennonite farmers in Pennsylvania to meet the demand or will they all be in jail?

Despite the fear-mongering of government, nutritional ignorance is giving way to the awareness that when it comes to the care of your body, you can't better nature. As evidence, I give you a delicious and nutritious letter from Scott in Victorville, California (published with his permission):

Dear Robert Scott Bell,

I serendipitously discovered your program 3 months ago (Talk 960 KIXW in CA) and have been an avid listener since. I also subscribed to your blog as well. Well, this note is really about raw organic milk. I listened to your broadcast about the raw milk controversy with great interest. I already knew that homogenization is what made the fat in milk indigestible and/or unusable by my body and that the pasteurization process killed all the bacteria in milk, but I did not know that the fat in raw milk was actually good for me and that the so-called 'bad bacteria' in raw milk was good for me as well. After listening, it removed my fear of drinking raw organic milk.

Well, finally, after visiting my local health food store (BJ's Health Food Store) this past Sunday (7/20) I bought myself a half gallon of raw organic milk. Of course it had the obligatory US Gov't Warning Label on it telling me that raw milk contains bacteria known to cause disease and illness, but I ignored that and brought it home.

Honestly, I did have some trepidations about my raw milk experiment. Would I like the taste and texture? Would my stomach or digestive tract react adversely to it? Would I indeed get sick from the bacteria mentioned on that warning label?

I poured myself an 8 ounce glass and drank it. Hmm, the taste was better than I thought it would be, and actually, it brought back childhood memories of milk I had drank as a kid (I am 52 yrs. old now, so we are talking late 50's early 60's milk). Yes, actually, it tasted good! The texture was not too foreign to me but I forgot about the coating it leaves in your mouth afterwards. I then realized that I had indeed drank raw milk many years ago and how much I loved it back then. I remember having to shake the bottle because of the natural separation that occurs when it sits. I remember my aunt and uncle, who had their own farm, keeping pitchers of their own milk in the 'fridge and drinking it there, as well.

My gastro-intestinal response was minimal but my body did indeed notice the difference and I could feel it. There was a little more 'gurgling' than normal but I knew that my body was just getting reacquainted with the bacteria and enzymes present in raw milk.

I now have at least one cup per day as part of my whey protein drink in the morning and I sometimes actually drink a cold glass later on. I'm finally allowing myself to nourish the milk cravings that I still get even after years of not drinking it. Seems my body remembered the goodness in milk, I just had to find that 'good milk' for my body once again.

I never thought I would ever, for the rest of my life, make milk a part of my diet again, but here I am drinking it daily and loving it.

Now when my grandson asks for milk, I gladly pour him a glass! I no longer fear that I am giving him a biologically dead and unhealthy food.

Yes, I actually feel good about milk again and I owe it to you and your educational program.

If I could, I would award you the Antoine Béchamp Medal of the Healthy Milieu for having the courage to eat right without asking for government approval or permission. Nuke the Food, Save the Government Welfare Scientists

USDA scientists say irradiation could be key to food safety "We used pretty aggressive levels of chlorine and found they weren't very effective at all. But when you have E. coli inside a leaf, and you irradiate it, the E. coli dies." What about the people who eat the food that was treated in such a way as to eradicate a life form? What effect does the ionizing radiation have on nutrition and cellular integrity?

Brendan Niemira, a microbiologist at the USDA's Eastern Regional Research Center in Pennsylvania who led the research, apparently is not concerned about nutrition, only microbes.

This is the problem with welfare scientists, they are paid with tax dollars to do things that would not be done if free market forces were at work. Where is the investigation as to why E. coli grows on spinach? Could it be the terrain? And if so, why not alter the terrain rather than nuke the vegetable? At least let the consumer decide if she wants to nuke it at home.

If irradiation is the key to food safety, then we have lost hope of ever restoring true understanding as to how to grow food that is fit for human consumption. Far be it from me to point out that we should be more concerned with saving the humans than saving the food, unless of course, humans intend to eat. Then save the food as well, but it all comes down to our understanding of The Law of the Terrain, Milieu or Environment.

You provide the soil in which life-sustaining or pathogenic microbes grow. Change the soil, change what grows there. Irradiate the food and irreparably disrupt its genetic integrity. Do you really think that ionizing radiation will make the food healthier? Enough of the "fear the microbe" garbage. Just grow the food "healthy" in the first place and watch the problem disappear along with this artificial need for "nuclear waste miracle grow" plant food.

Harvard's Synthetic Vitamins or Whole Food Nutrition?

Harvard Researchers Skeptical About Multivitamins "An estimated 35 percent of U.S. adults take multivitamins regularly, but according to Harvard researchers, this could be causing more harm than good." I agree, if the multivitamins are synthetic echoes of their real cousins found in whole food.

The problem with these propaganda pieces against dietary supplements is that they rarely differentiate between whole food nutrition and the synthetic vitamins of Big Pharma. It's that simple. Although I am pleased that more people are looking to dietary supplements to regain or maintain their health, there is still much to be learned about the optimal form of those supplements.

Vitamins and minerals in a whole food matrix are optimal precisely because they exist in the state which we were designed to assimilate, process and excrete. Most Vitamin C sold today does not exist in a whole food state. While I agree it is much preferable to ingest a couple of thousand milligrams of C instead of a pharmaceutical drug that could kill you, there are much more efficient ways to get nutrients into your body and have them used appropriately.

Organic whole food nutrition may be the fastest growing segment of the dietary supplement business -- a good sign that nutritional consciousness is rising. However, if you shop for supplements at the corner drug store, you are likely paying too much (even at Wal-Mart prices) for too little or nothing at all -- or even worse, something that may actually be toxic to the body. Multi-vitamins from the mass market are sure to increase oxidative stress, rather than reduce it as they claim.
