A strong national defense is as vital and necessary to the legitimate health of the nation as having a strong immune system is to the health of your body. Are we to learn nothing from nature? You don't see your immune system occupying other bodies just because they harbor foreign microbes that might be hell-bent on jumping into you just to cause some sort of illness.
Rather than exhausting your defense capabilities on offense, in nature, the object is to make your terrain and immune defenses so strong that even if the bad guys tried, they would fail.
Welfare is the health of the state as well, because it breeds dependence on artificial infusions of other people's money, taken by force. Have modern day leftists ever read the Ten Commandments?
